I met Hillary Thomas for lunch a short time ago.  I really can’t believe we hadn’t “officially met”.  We share many of the same friends and had even been at some of the same weddings and showers. I had heard she was charming, fabulous, stylish, creative, an amazing designer and creator of a great children’s bedding line. I just had to meet her, especially to talk linens. I am in the process of turning my daughters...

As part my on-going series of blogs highlighting important print collections, today we’ll look briefly at the graphic arts collection at Princeton University. To quote from their web site , the collection “includes artists’ and private press books, as well as materials for the study of paper and papermaking, printing, calligraphy, printmaking, fine binding, typography, and book design. Of special interest are the Sinclair Hamilton...

Hamburger Mary’s resides in a giant purple building in downtown Kansas City. We’re talking Grimace, Grape Ape, Mardi Gras purple. We weren’t sure what to expect when we stopped in for a bite to eat this past weekend, but we were pleasantly surprised to be taking inspirational decor photos before we left! Check out a few of their crazy and rather original ideas for dealing with an industrial space. Read Full Post  Read More →

In the Style Steal feature in Issue 68, we take a close look at a home occupied by two seriously stylish retro treasure hunters. Art director Jelena Jovanovic and film maker Terence Neale have renovated their Killarney apartment and furnished it with the fruits of their vintage finds. Their place was so filled with lovely things, we have almost as many pics in our outtakes folder as we do in our Style Steal story on pages 45-49 of Issue 68....

What do you do when you come across a figurine that does not have accompanying documentation? No box, no sales receipt, no papers, nothing. That presents a challenge to not only figure out what you might have, but when it was made or what it might be worth. Not so in the case of M.I. Hummel figurines. The mark on the bottom of each piece will help pinpoint the years the piece was made, which will of course help figure out possible values. Hummel...

Vintage silver jewellery is becoming increasingly sought after. As the price of gold rises it is making the cost of heavier pieces of gold jewellery rise too and become too expensive for every day wear for many of us. Silver jewellery wears well and as it ages it acquires a lovely soft patina as long as it is not over polished. Here are a few pieces of vintage silver jewellery available on antiquesavenue during March 2010. Vintage …  Read More →

Oscar night always gets us thinking about new, fun ideas for easy bonus seating . These rolling tree stump stools are so cute; while we’re not sure how practical they’d be at an actual table, as pictured here in Loft Life (spotted on the fabulous Happy Mundane), they’d be great to have around for a few extra seats. What do you think? Read Full  Read More →

Our color inspiration here at the Pink Pig for Spring came from a recent treasure hunt I spoke about on an earlier post. A former Bed & Breakfast here in the Adirondacks was filled with bedrooms full of antique Cottage Furniture in this perfect shade of pale green.  Read More →

The weather today in Boston is perfect . THIS would count as a consummate spring day — a rarity in New England. Even I might consider boat living on day like today. But for those who live year round at moorings in Boston Harbor, they bargain for a whole lot more than 60 degrees and sunny, as in 10 degrees and windy. Read Full Post  Read More →

The new issue’s cover image is from the story on pages 60 – 69, entitled “Natural Selection”, and I do dearly wish I’d been the one picked to live in this beautiful home on the slopes of Table Mountain. Chilean architect Antonio Zaninovic worked with the owners, using the footprint of their small home to make one much larger. Re-purposed ceiling rafters, stone excavated on-site, and using the “bones”...

Q: I am looking for a sofa and narrowed it down to either the Reese sofa by Mitchell Gold or Murray by Room & Board . I accidentally came across the Murray and couldn’t believe it was only $1,000 ($1,099 to upgrade to microfiber). Reese is about $2,000. Here is my question: Murray has single-wrapped foam cushioning. Reese has high-density, high-resiliency cushioning, with a fiber wrapped core — is there a huge difference between...
